Spring blossom

Flora is the start of all things floral. She is the ancient goddess of youth, spring and flowers. To describe her beauty would undermine her modesty. Her name is derived from the Latin word ‘flos’ which means flower. Flora was one among several fertility goddesses, but her association with the coming of springtime gave her particular importance. Oh romance of spring. Time of renewal, warm breezes and the return of all things green. When the worries and drudgery of winter melt away and make room for the new, a promise of things to come...

The ancient Greeks enjoyed spring as much as we do today and naturally, they took the time to inhale the fresh scents of the blooming flowers that fought their way through the wintery soil. To honour Flora, each year the Greek threw this amazing Floralia festival which was traditionally held between April 28 and May 3. Five days of farces and mimes were enacted; the men decked in flowers, and the women wearing - normally forbidden - gay costumes, including nudity when called for. It was a blissful and cheery way to symbolize the amazing annual renewal of the cycle of life; to honor nature and her mysterious ways.

Flora is our muse too. Like Karl Lagerfeld said on the criteria of beauty in ancient, then classical Greece: ‘There have never been a more beautiful representations of women’. There is no better way to celebrate the 10th issue of The Green Gallery than honouring Flora. The start of all things floral. The hundreds of different kinds of flowers she commands make her the goddess of buds, blooms, and basically anything green that sprouts out of the ground. This beautiful girl who brings forth the flowers in a wave of blossoms each spring. When she talked, her lips used to breathe spring roses. And like spring itself Flora beamed with immaculate beauty_______.

Celebrate Flora & the beauty of nature.
