Jean–Pierre Cassigneul (1935)

Women and flowery summer gardens: these are the favorite subjects of Jean-Pierre Cassigneul. The woman plays an all-important role in his work. Or as the famous art historian Roger Passeron describes: “Women are the ‘raison d’etre’ of his art.” The artist knows to portray them in a tempting way, often alone, and profile, and with a serious, almost sober expression. This fascination is likely to begin in childhood. The house of Cassigneul was regularly filled with beautiful models because his father was a famous couturier.

“I’ve had to give this painting some time to really sink in. At first I was a bit lost what to do. One day I saw the use of colour in the shadows, the teal light on the skin. The red light in the background. This became my inspiration. I divided the image in elements: The light, the Pearls, the Table, the Flowers and the Woman to start a narration________.”

Mathilde: “Inspiration from flowers, plants and the natural world has always been present in my life. Both my parents showed me the beauty of nature and even more importantly, how to inspire your work by nature. The symmetry, the colours, the patterns, you can learn a lot from looking at nature. Flowers are recurring them in my work, it’s just a never-ending source of inspiration. I work a lot with flowers in my non commissioned work, which has a great outcome, while a lot of clients appreciate my love of flowers and ask for the same approach. To see what other people do with flowers is very exciting too, it’s just so divers. There’s a new wave and interest in floral design, which has some pretty amazing artists. I love all styles of flowers and floral arrangements, however Ikebana is something I‘m currently very interested in. Still, I get easily sidetracked and my Ikebana piece can grow into a elaborate romantic piece. To photograph flowers is to keep them alive, a flower has a short life, I try to do my best to use that time. Even in a few hours of shooting you can see the difference between photo 1 and 20. You just have to keep up, otherwise the magic is gone.”

Favourite flower

Mathilde: “At the moment my favourite flower is the Iris. It has something mysterious and wild_______.”
